Los Angeles’s most iconic filmmaker, David Lynch, died in January 2025. On his gravestone there are only three words, discreetly etched: “Night Blooming Jasmine.” Its intoxicating scent was so deeply loved by him, symbolizing the connection between the modern city of Los Angeles and the lingering, ghostly mood of old Hollywood. In a 2016 interview, Lynch explained that smelling the Night Blooming Jasmine while driving through Los Angeles at night could wake the spirits of the kings and queens of Hollywood, like Clark Gable or Gloria Swanson. It is the fragrance of royalty, indeed.
